European LIFE project for the enlargement and restoration of El Hito Lagoon

El Hito Lagoon is one of the few examples of temporary saline wetlands remaining in Spain, a remnant of ancient inland seas in which endemic plant and insect species of great uniqueness develop. Now, a LIFE project of the European Union promotes the improvement and conservation of the El Hito Lagoon, one of the most emblematic nature reserves of La Mancha in Cuenca.

El Hito LIFE project boosts this natural area which is part of the Network of Protected Areas of Castilla-La Mancha, in the Natura 2000 Network and also Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance for the protection of aquatic birds.

In rainy years, crane populations at El Hito can reach up to 10,000 individuals.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The saline El Hito lagoon is not only part of the traditional landscape of La Mancha, but also constitutes a natural area of high biological diversity. To halt the decline it has suffered in recent years, Fundación Global Nature, together with the Provincial Council of Cuenca and the support of the EU LIFE program, are working on the restoration and conservation of this protected area.
